This Thanksgiving

from the album

On the fourth Thursday of every November,
we all take part in a big get-together.
Out of pajamas we're off to my grandma's
for turkey and stuffing please.

Uncles and cousins and aunts all surround me.
Oh how the size of my family astounds me.
Some are peculiar but all are delightful,
I love my big family.

And when we sit down at the table
we say things for which we are grateful,
like strawberries, libraries, swings in the park,
pictures to color, my brother named Marc,
bees that make honey,
a nose that’s not runny,
that’s what I’m thankful for
on this Thanksgiving.

On the fourth Thursday of every November,
my friends and I take some time to remember
the year that we’ve had the good times and bad
and marvel at what we see.

I write addresses and mom writes a note
to send to our neighbors and family remote
and when we have finished I wash off the spinach
and start on the recipe.

And when we sit down at the table
we say things for which we are grateful,
like strawberries, libraries, swings in the park,
pictures to color, my buddy named Marc,
bees that make honey,
a nose that’s not runny,
that’s what I’m thankful for
on this Thanksgiving.
